The Boxcar Phantoms are an Iowa-based dark country duo formed in 2010 by Ryan Costello and Jake Maxwell, whose songs were originally performed live via acoustic guitar and washtub bass. Jake left the band in late 2010 due to personal issues, and was replaced by Harry Weigandt on electric bass. 

The band gained steam through 2011, but went on hiatus at the end of 2011 through most of 2012. After other projects fizzled out, Ryan and Harry got back together and were able to hit the ground running in March 2013. These recordings are from that era, re-mastered and proudly distributed by 86 Dresden Records.

They have dubbed their sound: "Country Dark"; a mixture of old-timey country, Americana, and bluegrass, with an upbeat punk style of energy.  The duo prides themselves on bringing back an 'old-school' country style (with a dark edge); an approach to music that lends itself to a truly unique and eclectic listening experience.
